Come, let us sing joyfully to the Lord; cry out to the rock of our salvation.
Let us greet him with a song of praise, joyfully sing out our psalms.
PSALM 95
Music Serves the Expression of Faith
Among the many signs and symbols used by the Church to celebrate its faith, music is of preeminent importance. As sacred song united to words it forms a necessary or integral part of the solemn liturgy.
Yet the function of music is ministerial; it must serve and never dominate. Music should assist the assembled believers to express and share the gift of faith that is within them and to nourish and strengthen their interior commitment of faith. It should heighten the texts so that they speak more fully and more effectively.
The quality of joy and enthusiasm which music adds to community worship cannot be gained in any other way. It imparts a sense of unity to the congregation and sets the appropriate tone for a particular celebration. (23, Music in Catholic Worship, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 1983)
The Music Ministry at the Divine Mercy of Our Lord Catholic Church
Our pastoral leadership is committed to creating an environment that best enables our community to fully participate in worship. The Music Ministry seeks to fulfill that commitment by encouraging full and active participation by the assembly through the use of thoughtfully chosen songs and music that reflect the scriptural readings and messages of the season. These songs and music for liturgical celebrations are provided for by singers and musicians trained and commissioned for this pastoral ministry.
The weekend and Special Masses are the major areas of responsibility for the Music Ministry, although members may also be called to serve at other special worship services such as weddings, funerals, Holy Days and Reconciliation Services.
At present, there are three (3) main music groups serving in the parish: The English Choir, the Adult Spanish Choir, and the Youth Spanish Choir.
What is expected of a Music Ministry Member?
Training and preparation are very important for all Music Ministry members. Hence, attendance to meetings, workshops and/or rehearsals is highly encouraged.
Regular rehearsals are held once a week and special rehearsals are scheduled for special and occasional liturgical celebrations.
Who may Become a Member?
Any baptized Catholic with a gift or talent in singing or in playing a musical instrument and an active registered member of the Divine Mercy of Our Lord Catholic Church is eligible to apply for membership in the Music Ministry of the parish.
